I've come across the AROUND() option recently and it is a really important and useful one. It's ridiculous that Google doesn't include it in its advanced search options. Like several other things Google does (for example, cutting the titles of the results in a way that does not allow you to understand what's actually in that page unless you open it; this ends up in having 2,546 tabs opened at all times), it seems they are not highly interested in helping you find only what you're looking for (if this webpage exists), but instead trying to get users to have to waste an immense amount of time scrolling through web pages that, as it turns out, do not answer your question at all. The around option is one of the best currently-existing possibilities to avoid that. Luckily, Google didn't take this option off yet (but I won't be surprised if that happens), but they hide it. Seems like they're not interested in having their users finding only web pages that include several different terms that, given their proximity, are rather likely to have something to do with one another.

Using the AROUND option has made searching better for us, too - it's been frustrating to see search results get a little worse over time. Thanks for watching!! :D

Great video as always. I knew some of the tips already but I learned others too. Just a small correction: Google isn't a repository of information, it just indexes websites and presents them to us according to our search. Those otherwise scattered websites, aka, the Internet *are* the repository. Which include some google websites, granted. And now a hint: Maybe you should say that the OR operator has to be in capslock or it won't work. You can add some of those youtube card annotation boxes over the video that are sometimes used for corrections without having to change the entire video. Keep the videos coming, and thank you for making them :-)
orlendatube 1 year ago
Google does capture what it indexes though.thats how you can find past versions of websites.

A search engine is not a repository. Repositories are storage locations for collections of stuff, generally fungible stuffs, in this case data on misc web servers. The choice of search engine does not effect the content or location of the data, it only serves as a method of finding servers and filtering meta-data.
Drag Flame 1 year ago
wolfedog99 I think it is a repository given that it has a copy of most of these files (or just parts of them like names for videos) (otherwise why would they need all these petabytes of storage?) And plz, correct me if I am wrong

It's 2017. No need to use Google anymore. Google search is full of SEO spam and they get literally thousands of DMCA takedown notices which means their results are missing tons of content.

NOTE: All of these techniques worked for us when we made this video, but of course Google is changing and updating all the time. At some point, these might stop working in the way we demonstrate.

CogitoErgoCogitoSum 1 year ago
Very sweet. I never knew about the. operator, nor the * or the AROUND. Totally new to me. Thank you. You missed some powerful ones though. I have a short list of additional tricks. 1) Search via for scholarly works. 2) Search via specifically for news reports. Go to /newspapers for newspaper articles strictly, dating back over 100 years. 3) Or specifying allinurl.edu for school websites. Use allinurl: for anything in the url itself. 4) Similarly, allintitle:, allintext:, for associated results. There is even allinanchor: which searches just the links of a page. 5) You can say a lot more about those boolean operators too. AND, OR, XOR, -. This includes the parentheses. You can group your ANDs but also OR the whole thing with another group of ANDs, etc. 6) You can narrow with location: or find related content with related. 7) Make comparisons with __ vs __. 8) Google search page also has an advanced search tab. On this page you can narrow by usage rights, by how long ago the page was last updated, among other things. 9) After youve conducted a search, you can filter by language, sort by certain ordering options. There is even a verbatim option. 10) A lot of people dont know this - Ive never done it - but you can conduct searches by uploading a photograph of something to google. The site will identify it or its key features. 11) When searching for media content, like photos for example, you can narrow your search by color scheme and resolution, and other criteria appropriate to the media. Some other search tips. 12) It also depends on where you search. I recommend trying different search engines entirely. Maybe not always be better, but will return different results by a different priority algorithm. 13) Alternative engines are especially important for *what* you search - google has been in the news lately about hiding content that doesnt tout the company political line. Diversity your sources. Being too powerful, too heavily relied on, Google is getting away with clear ideological biases. All engines may be guilty of this to some extent in one direction or another. 14) Similarly, try conducting a search at your local public library website for online or downloadable content. 15) If you attend a university or college with a library, or have access to databases, you can actually tie them into the Google search engine, and use Google to do your local database searches. 16) There are also specialty search engines. Since you mentioned song lyrics, there is an entire search engine devoted to song lyric searches. There are search engines devoted to number sequences, as well as sources like WolframAlpha, etc. Highly particular searches. 17) Find your content on youtube or wikipedia. They usually have citations, external links, etc. If they dont then they're doing it wrong.
