In order to do more pushups you have to understand that just like any other exercise, they require you to approach them as an athlete would. This means, you have to have an appreciation not just for the arms and chest that seem to be doing all the work but the legs and lower body that is allowing them to be maximally efficient in the first place. The concept can be introduced best by presenting you an analogy. If you wanted to swing a sledge hammer as hard as possible, would you attempt it while standing on solid cement ground or while standing on a balance board? Likely, you answered the first. The reason is, your body is a kinetic chain and ignoring this can be costly when it comes to the generation of maximum power and force. Power generation starts at the ground if your feet are in contact with it. It doesn’t matter if you are doing this while standing up or while horizontal to the ground as you are in a pushup. As soon as your feet make contact with your ground, their participation as stabilizers to what is going on above them is crucial. If you want to preserve the force that you generate above as much as possible then you are going to have to figure out a way to stabilize from the bottom up. When it comes to a pushup, the energy leaks start occurring the minute you forget about the role of the lower body and core in the exercise. If you simply think about the arms and chest then you are destroying your ability to do as many reps of the pushup as you are capable of. In fact, if you make the corrections that I’m showing you here, you may see up to a 30 percent increase in the number of pushups that you can do in a single set starting with your next one. This is the same concept by the way as attempting to carry someone. If their body is rigid, it is much easier to lift them with far less effort and move them where you want them to go. When they are loose (dead weight) it becomes much harder to lift them. The same applies to your own bodyweight when attempting to lift it during a pushup. To plug the energy leaks as much as possible you want to start down at the ankles. Lock your ankles into a 90 degree angle. You cannot allow them to bounce during the exercise. If your ankles are rocking or bouncing because they are loose then you are losing force that could be directed through your arms into the ground. Next, you want to focus on the knees. Straighten them out as hard as possible by contracting the quads and squeezing the glutes. This not only tightens up the legs from the front but from the back as well as you co-contract the muscles influencing the hip joints too. The last key is to make sure you tighten up the abs. This entire tightening effect from the chest down will provide your arms a stable platform from which to push from just as would happen when attempting to swing that sledgehammer with maximum force from a solid surface. You will instantly see an increase in the number of pushups that you can perform. Some have reported up to a 30% increase in the amount of push ups that they can do in a single set just by plugging these energy leaks. The key from here is to not just do this but also incorporate the second tip I share here towards doing up to 100 pushups in a single set. As I always say, repetition begets repetition. As soon as you are done doing as many pushups as you can in a single set, prop yourself up into an incline pushup by putting your hands onto the back of a couch or piece of furniture and keep repping out. The more reps you crank out here the more you are increasing your capacity to do work in a fatigued state. This will bode well as you continue to increase the number of flat ground pushups that you can do. You will notice that over time they will steadily keep going up and your strength in the exercise will improve practically each time you do it. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I’m going to teach you 1 simple method that you can use to increase your vocabulary. This is the technique that I teach my students, and this is also what I use personally to learn new words – so I know that this works. So what is this technique? Well, it’s the 3R method. It’s called 3R because there are three steps: Read, Record and Review. I will show you how to do all three of these correctly to get the best results. So let’s talk about the first step: Read. If there’s one secret to building your vocabulary, it’s reading. There is simply no better way. You should aim to read for an hour per day. If that’s difficult, do at least half an hour, i.e. 30 minutes but one hour per day will give you the most benefit. Now I’m not talking about reading the newspaper or studying textbooks. That kind of reading is good but it’s not the best way to learn new words. For that, you need to read what is interesting. So here’s an idea: pick something that you’re really interested in. Like sports, movies, music, cars, fitness, fashion, electronics etc. - whatever you feel passionate about. Then find material that you will enjoy reading. Some great examples are magazines, novels, short stories or biographies related to your topic. And don’t forget the internet – one of my favorite places for reading online is Wikipedia. There are millions of articles on this site and whatever your topic of interest is, you can go on Wikipedia and find articles to read. Now, there’s something really important. When you read (whether it’s books or online material), there will be many words that are difficult – that you don’t understand. But don’t look up every single one of these in a dictionary. Because that will distract you and make you bored. Instead, your focus should be to just understand the overall idea of what you are reading. For any difficult words, try to guess the meaning from the surrounding information. If you cannot, mark them with a pencil, or write them down and you can come back to them after you finish reading. After you have finished reading, you move on to step 2 – record. This is where you collect new words. So now, you go back to the text you read and find words to learn – there are two types of words that you can learn – unknown words (words that you don’t know), and inactive words (these are words that you have seen before but you’re not sure how to use). Aim to collect about 5-10 new words every day. Once you have the words, you’re going to note them down in a notebook, on your computer (in a Microsoft Word or Excel file) or even your smartphone (there are many apps that will let you save and learn vocabulary). Start by taking your first word and look it up in a dictionary. I personally prefer to use online dictionaries like Cambridge, Oxford or Merriam-Webster. And now, you can start to record the word. Let’s look at the best way to do that. In your notebook or file, first write the word - let’s say ‘creative’ is the word you’re learning. From your dictionary, you should then write what part of speech it is (that is, whether it’s a noun, verb, adjective, adverb etc.). This word is an adjective. Then you write its definition – ‘creative’ means ‘having the ability to produce original ideas’ - it can describe people or activities. Then you note any example sentences that you can find or you can make sentences of your own. Here are a couple of examples: “Frank Zappa was a highly creative musician.” “Children enjoy doing creative activities.” Along with this, you should also note down the correct pronunciation of the word in phonetic symbols. This word is pronounced /kri ˈeɪ.tɪv/. There are three syllables – /kri/, /eɪ/, and /tɪv/ with the stress on /eɪ/ – /kriˈeɪ.tɪv/. You might not know these symbols very well, that’s OK. With the dictionary, practice the correct pronunciation a few times, then copy the symbols. Over time, you will become comfortable with them. It’s also a good idea to make a note of the reference – that is, where you learned the word: which book, website etc. Because, later, when you are reviewing the word, you can more easily recall where you saw it, and you can also go to the same website or book if you want to check how it’s used. You should also try to find and note down the different forms of the word. For example, we said that the word ‘creative’ is an adjective. But it has other forms too.

The first proven way to increase your metabolism is by increasing your lean body mass. Now the exact number of how many calories each pound of muscle Burns isn't fully clear. At one point it was believed to be 50 to 100 calories per pound of muscle but nowadays that seems like an overestimation. Some studies say that for each pound of fat on your body you only burn two extra calories to maintain it. And for muscle it's only six extra calories so it's really not all that much of an increase. On the other hand organs like the kidneys and liver and the Heart can burn up to 200 calories per pound. So it would seem that muscle plays a really small role in your metabolism. However there's a lot about muscles effects that we don't fully know about that could add up throughout the day and can easily explain how muscle can be burning a lot more than six calories per pound. First of all these studies are done in a way that keeps protein turnover at a constant rate. Let me explain what protein turnover is. All day your body is creating and breaking down muscle. We refer to the balance between protein synthesis and protein degradation as protein turnover. If you have more synthesis and breakdown then you're in what's called an anabolic mode and your building muscle. If you have more breakdown then synthesis then you're in what's called a catabolic state that burns lean muscle tissue. The problem with keeping protein turnover the same in the studies is that most types of resistance exercises will accelerate protein turnover which ultimately increases calories burnt hours and sometimes days after the workout. Some studies show that the more muscle you have the more calories you burn after an intense workout. So this is a perfect example how muscle has many hidden effects on your metabolism. When you're done exercising especially after a weight training session it takes time for your body to return to homeostasis. Your body needs time and energy to refill the depleted glycogen stores in your muscles and it also needs energy for more protein turnover. So the assumption that muscle itself Burns a ton of calories at rest is probably not true however muscle after the influence of training specially strength training and high intensity training seems to burn a lot more calories in the recovery process. So if you're not exercising definitely try to incorporate some weight training or some high intensity interval training to help increase the amount of calories that you burn at rest. Like I said we don't know the full story about muscle but we do know that it does influence your resting energy expenditure. In a study called age related decrease in resting energy expenditure in sedentary women we get to see a glimpse of what causes that slowed metabolism that we see as people get older. A lot of people believe that as you get older your metabolism naturally slows down and there's not much you could do. But this might not be true. In this study the results suggest that a loss of muscle mass as we age especially leg muscle can lead to decreases in your resting energy expenditure. The study also does acknowledge that the decreases in resting energy expenditure are not fully explained just by changes in the body composition. So there are other factors at play here. The exact effect down to the number of calories burnt for each pound of muscle is unknown but if you want to improve and increase your metabolism there is a huge correlation between a healthy body composition and a higher basal metabolic rate. The more lean mass you have the higher your metabolism will be. Even if it's not a drastic change it's one of the few ways that you can actually affect the metabolism.

This is just what metabolism is. There are a lot of things that can affect the metabolism of your body, ranging from your body composition to the food you eat. At a younger age, your muscle mass stores up energy, thereby preventing the addition of unnecessary weight. Nevertheless, as you get older, that muscle mass is loss and this gives way to more body fat. But don’t sweat it, here are 7 tips on how to boost metabolism. 1. Eat well – In order to lose weight, you’ll need to cut calories to lose weight. However, cutting too low might not be too good for your metabolism. When you eat less than what you actually need for the biological functioning of your body (around 1,200 calories for some women), it affects your body’s metabolism rate. And when such happens, your body begins to break down calorie-burning tissue for energy. You’ll need to eat well enough that you’re not hungry. 2. Always eat your breakfast – The importance of eating your breakfast every morning cannot be overemphasized. Breakfast is one of the most important aspect of a good metabolism diet, and should never be skipped if your weight of utmost concern to you. Maybe you don’t know this, but women who skip their breakfast are 4 ½ times likely to be overweight. No matter how busy your schedule is, try to eat something in the morning. If nothing else, try to grab a yogurt on your way out. 3. Drink tea or coffee – One Japanese study has it that a cup of tea can increase your metabolism rate by 12%. More still, many researchers have come to agree that the antioxidant catechins in tea or coffee can be an effective metabolism booster. 4. Use fiber to fight fat – Studies have shown that some fiber can help with your fat burn by as much as 30%. Same studies revealed that women who eat high fiber-content foods, don’t gain unnecessary weight over time. You should aim at eating at least 25g of fiber in a day. This can be easily gotten from eating about three servings of each vegetables and fruits. 5. Don’t forget protein – The human body needs protein in order to maintain lean muscle. Studies have shown that protein can rev post meal calorie burn by as much as 35%, so include protein in your everyday diet. 6. Drink enough water – According to some German researchers, drinking at least 6 cups of water everyday can increasing your resting metabolism by about 50 calories every day. This is just enough to shed 5 pounds of fat in a year. 7. Eat foods rich in iron – Iron-rich foods are essential for fast metabolism diet because they carry the oxygen that your body needs to burn off excess fat. Build more muscle faster here - Subscribe to this channel here - Pullups can be one of the harder exercises to do a lot of reps of simply because they demand you have good strength and control of your own bodyweight. In this video, I’m going to show you how to do 20 or more pullups in a single set regardless of how many you can do right now. The key is to use the pullup progression I lay out as well as the instant fix that you can use to start doing more pullups in your very next set. First it is important to understand that a pullup is not just a back exercise. There is far more that goes into executing a proper pull up. You need strength in your arms, forearms, and core as well. That’s right. If your core isn’t strong enough or you are forgetting to activate it when doing this exercise then you are definitely costing yourself a chance to increase the amount of reps you are performing on this popular upper body exercise. To increase the number of pullups you are doing you need to learn the right progression. I like having people set up a bar at about neck height and then grabbing it with one hand. The angle at which you align your torso to the bar is dependent on the ability level and your strength. If you are just starting out or consider yourself more of a beginner, you would start with your body more upright and behind the bar. If you were more advanced, you could get your body more beneath the bar. Either way, you want to grab the bar with one hand and try and pull yourself up to it. The key is to keep your elbows out wide and not allow your body to twist as you pull up. This will demand that your core is activated here as well. As I already mentioned, this is going to come in handy and useful when it comes to plugging the energy leaks later on in this video. The other mistake people make when performing this one arm inverted row is that they allow their forearm to collapse as they pull in and the hand winds up making contact with the chest. To perform this right, you want to make sure the hand is in line with the shoulder and touching the outside of the chest when your body is as high as it gets towards the bar. Keep working yourself down until your strength allows you to be under the bar. Make sure you work both arms each time you do this. You will be surprised at how quickly you will be able to make the transition to get lower and lower and this will quickly start translating over to your ability to do pullups. Next, once up in the pullup position you want to be sure that you plug the energy leaks that are common and killing your ability to knock out a lot of pullups. Do this by tightening your quads, pointing your feet towards the ground, squeezing your glutes, and then contracting your abs. Your body will experience a tightness that has been lacking and will instantly help you to transfer more of the force you are exerting into the bar to do more pullups. No it is not a magic trick, it is just biomechanics and efficiency that is helping you to do this.
