Time-lapse filmed over 4 days in HD, we watch the Carolina Reaper chili seeds germinate. See the radicle (primary root) come out of the seed coat, then watch the cotyledon come out and grow (first part of the plant you see above soil). The seeds used are Carolina Reaper seeds, currently the Guinness World Record holder for the hottest chilli in the world (correct at time of filming and publish date). The Carolina Reaper was created by Ed Currie of PuckerButt Pepper Company This footage is shot using time lapse method. Settings used: 1 exposure every 2 minutes, recording format AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) on a Panasonic W850 HD Video Camera. To create this short clip it took 3 weeks of research, attempts, frustration and work. The footage was all shot inside a propagator set at 28ºC, the camera was plugged into the mains to maintain 24 hour power. We firstly put the seeds onto kitchen roll, but soon realised due to root colour this was not the best way to show you the growth. So we used a black piece of cloth. With the first few attempts we noticed that the cloth would dry out very quickly, to overcome this we made a water reservoir with a wick (made of kitchen roll) and fed this under the cloth. The camera and seed tray are all resting on a piece of wood, the reason for this is that in the first few attempts we noticed in the footage that the seed tray was 'pulsating' caused by the propagator heating up and cooling down. Wood maintains an almost constant temperature thus removing the 'pulsing effect'. Propagator used: Vitopod Heated Propagator with Thermostat from Greenhouse Sensation We hope you have enjoyed this video and maybe inspire a few to try. 3.2.1.EAT! 10 brave souls take on the chilli pepper eating contest held over the F1 Grand Prix weekend at the official Silverstone Woodlands campsite. With contestants from Ireland, England, Scotland and even Italy this a a true international chilli battle! Who shall win? The weekend has lots of entertainment which starts on the Wednesday evening through to Sunday night, as part of this we run a chilli eating contest which anyone can enter as long as they are fit and healthy and sign a disclaimer stating the fact. With much international interest we inevitable have participants that enter from all over the world and at this competition we have an entry who flew in from Italy who's name is Arturo Renricca (Italy's champion chili eater 2017 and holds the record for consuming 970gm's in 30 minutes), he had an interesting journey to say the least, on arrival we soon learnt that even after applying online for the contest and purchasing a F1 ticket that he had not arranged travel to and from the airport nor any accommodation (all available online via the F1 website). (To note when you book a F1 Ticket it then asks you if you want to book accommodation etc) However with a massive language barrier we prevailed and 'Google Translate became our friend' that weekend and we felt sorry for Arturo aka Mr Spicy and we looked after him and arranged camping and transport. We also introduced Arturo to our favourite drink Thatcher’s Cider to witch you know us and yep we think Arturo liked it to. We do not normal include a dialogue like this but this will certainly go down in the Clifton Chilli Club's memories for a long time. Thanks Arturo and we hope you got home safely? A simple guide on how to overwinter your chilli pepper plants. ChilliDave shows us how to choose your plant and how easy and simple it is to over winter. The advantage of overwintering is that growth will start early in the season and you will have chillies before your seedlings mature, as the plant has established itself. The chili plant he has decided to trim is a Naga Viper one of the Worlds Hottest Chili A few choice clips with secateurs (sharp) he trims off the stalks, just above old leaf drop and near the main stem. We advise using a slow release fertilizer to re-nourish the root ball, then in the new year we will re-pot into a larger pot approx 30cm diameter, however you can put in a larger pot as this will increase the size of the plant (this is depending on the type of chili). Depending on where you live in the world and the climate over wintering will vary, for example we are in the United Kingdom and we do this around the end of October to mid November. However the plant will also show signs to ie if the leaves stat to drop then this is the time to overwinter. Depending also on where you have your plant growing to, as if they are in your house/flat then this generally will be warmer than a greenhouse/polytunnel (unheated) so as you can see there are a number of factors to consider. When watering you only need a little as the plant is not very active so be carefull as you do not want to over water and potentially cause root rot. For more growing tips please check out our website: Filmed using a Samsung Galaxy S3 Smart phone. On location in a cottage styled kitchen Please share and subscribe, thank you for watching. We show you how to make some Scotch 'Bonnet' Eggs, with simple ingredients we take you through step by step to end up with a our proper version of a normal Scotch egg with a little heat. History of the Scotch Egg: According to luxury food emporium Fortnum & Mason, the Scotch egg was invented at its Piccadilly headquarters in the 18th century for its most affluent customers. Even back then, thought, it was a travellers' snack: Piccadilly back then was full of coaching inns, from where many landowners would start the journey to their country estates. Portable snacks were of the essence – so, in the days before sushi boxes, enterprising staff at the shop came up with the idea of the easy-to-hold treat that is the Scotch egg. By Leah Hyslop Telegraph's Digital Lifestyle Editor. Ingredients: Makes 6 Scotch Bonnet Eggs 500g Sausage meat 2x Scotch Bonnet Chillies 2 Tbsp Tomato puree 6 Eggs (free range golden yolk) 1 Tsp Harissa 2 Cloves of garlic Salt Pepper Flour 100g Breadcrumbs Top tip: To soft boil, we placed the eggs in cold water the put on heat and bring to the boil. As soon as it is starts to boil remove pan from heat source and leave standing for 4 mins. Once 4 mins has gone then take eggs out of pan and place them into chilled/iced water. Have you got Fungus Gnats (families Mycetophilidae and Sciaridae)? we show you how to deal with this problem/infestation, they are the little gnats(flies) that you see flying around the base of your plants and not just chilli plants they can appear on any house plant and in the greenhouse. The gnat lays it's eggs in compost and the larvae then hatch and this is what can cause damage to your roots. The average life cycle of Fungus gnats is approx 30 days. We show you our 4 top tips on how to prevent and cure this problem. Tip 1 Remove and replace the top few centimetres of compost. Tip 2 Cover your compost with either grit or sharp sand. Tip 3 Use a sticky fly trap purchased from a garden centre. Tip 4 Put a carnivorous plant at the base of your plant (Venus Flytrap). Sometimes also known as friendship planting.
